We are seeking qualified applicants for a unique postdoctoral fellowship appointment with split (50/50) responsibilities in research and undergraduate advising. The fellow will join a pilot program in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture (NSFA), which aims to provide a more holistic experience for postdoctoral scholars than is traditionally offered through positions that are exclusively research-oriented. Through this position, the successful candidate will have a 50% research appointment (described further below) in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology (https://umaine.edu/wle/) in the lab of Dr. Erik Blomberg (http://erikblomberg.weebly.com/), who will act as primary supervisor. The remaining 50% of the appointment will be housed within the NSFA Academic Support Center (https://nsfa.umaine.edu/current/advising/ ), under the advisement of NSFA Associate Dean for Instruction Dr. Susan Sullivan, with job duties as described below. In addition to formal job duties, the postdoctoral associate will have the opportunity to participate in professional development activities centered on practices in higher education, such as those offered through the UMaine Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (https://umaine.edu/citl/ ), Center for Research in STEM Education (https://umaine.edu/risecenter/ ), and through interactions with a peer group of postdoctoral associates from across the UMaine campus with interests in higher education. Typical hiring salary for this one-year fixed-length postion is $50,000.

 

Research: The primary research focus for this position will involve working with a large dataset from GPS-marked American woodcock that has been collected as part of the Eastern Woodcock Migration Research Cooperative (woodcockmigration.org ).  The EWMRC dataset includes GPS location data collected from ~500 marked individuals, which have collected more than 28,000 locations to date from throughout North America.  The successful applicant will work with project PIs to identify a priority research question for the focus of a peer-reviewed publication that compliments prior and ongoing work with this dataset.  While there is some flexibility in the specific focus, we particularly seek applicants with background and interest the spatial structure of animal migration, especially as it relates to avian conservation.  In addition to producing a research article as lead author, and as time allows, candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with PIs, graduate students, and other collaborators on additional projects, manuscripts, and outreach products. 

 

Academic Advising: The position will be responsible for academic advising of first-year undergraduate students in majors in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture for academic year 2022-2023.  Extensive training on academic advising, including general advising practices, UMaine-specific policies, and unit/degree specific advising will be provided, and may include participation in advising workshops.  Collaboration with the Program Coordinator(s) and academic staff from the assigned units is imperative.  Academic advising duties will include answering advisee emails and questions, arranging meetings with advisees to plan course schedules and sequences, monitoring student progress throughout the semester, and providing students with referrals to campus resources as needed. Additional duties related to undergraduate academics may include assisting with activities within academic units and/or the NSFA Academic Support Center such as recruiting, retention, enrollment, data management, or assisting with new initiatives.  The position may also involve attending program curriculum committee and/or academic staff meetings, and assisting with tasks related to teaching courses may also be included as time permits such as first-year orientation courses, capstone projects, field experiences, or assisting a course instructor.

Required Qualifications: PhD in Ecology or related field at time of hire. Experience with data management and analysis in Program R as well as experience with GIS and other approaches to spatial analysis highly desired.  Record of publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts.  Demonstrated interest in a career path involving higher education, and a commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Other Desired Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants with experience or demonstrated interest in avian migration, animal population ecology, and quantitative methods.  Past experience interacting with undergraduate students such as supervising research technicians, mentoring undergraduate researchers, or serving as a teaching assistant, will be viewed favorably.
