Advertised Job Summary |
The Chief Engineer is responsible for development and daily operations of the Power Electronics Systems laboratory. The Chief Engineer reports to the Project Director and works with principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students to support the entire scope of research activities of the Power Electronics Group in this and related laboratory spaces. The scope of research activities includes design and development of power electronics components and systems including cross-disciplinary supporting systems such as thermal fluid and machinery systems, modeling and simulation of power electronics systems, power hardware in the simulation loop, real time data acquisition, and control of power electronic systems. Real time computing is inherent in all of these activities. The Chief Engineer is expected to provide expert technical assistance for executing the research, to manage the research equipment and facilities, to assist in allocation of time and scheduling of projects that use the research facilities. The Chief Engineer will participate in continuous improvement of the laboratory capabilities, manage maintenance of equipment, and daily compliance with safety regulations.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions) |
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and minimum four (4) years of experience in designing, installing, configuring, or using power electronics equipment.

Preferred Qualifications |
MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering Experience operating or managing power electronics facilities at kW to MW power levels Professional Engineers license or other certification relevant to power electronics Experience with project management

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities |
- Understanding of digitally controlled electronic power converters operating at the kV and kA power levels, real time data acquisition and computing, use of simulation models for designing and operating power electronic systems. Understanding of safety implications of equipment usage.
- Excellent analytical skills, and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, to organize and prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and to operate efficiently in a research environment with rapidly evolving and sometimes-competing needs.
- Familiar with or able to quickly learn university and industry safety requirements and regulations such as OSHA, ANSI, NEC, UofSC Health and Safety.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken forms, using language appropriate to the technical domain.
- Proficient with general computing skills, and use of MS Office software including MS Project.
