The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at The University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 22, 2022. Preference will be given to applicants with research expertise in the areas of dairy reproductive physiology, microbiology, animal well-being, or the impact of climate and other environmental changes on animal health and well-being. We interpret these areas broadly, but especially value individuals with the potential for research synergies with existing disciplines and faculty on campus including with the Larner College of Medicine and the recently established UVM/USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Food Systems Research Center, as well as for cross-disciplinary collaboration in the areas of Food Systems and One Health among others.
Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in the animal or veterinary sciences or a closely related area and have a strong research record. Postdoctoral experience is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including a required course for majors and an upper-level elective in the candidate’s area of expertise, mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and serve the academic and professional communities. The research program is expected to lead to publications and presentations in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets and be supported by extramural funding.

The state’s land grant institution, The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, is a comprehensive research university with a current enrollment of over 12,000 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The scientific and academic environments in the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and throughout the UVM community are dynamic, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary. Research excellence is accomplished by developing strong, collaborative relationships across campus and beyond. Undergraduate student engagement in research is encouraged. With nearly 300 undergraduate majors, the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is one of the largest departments within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. All departments within the college are supported in part by funding and facilities provided through the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station. Animal facilities for teaching and research within the college, which include the Miller Research and Education Center, the Hardacre Equine Center, and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm, can be found at http://www.uvm.edu/~cals/ . The Department has developed strong collaborative partnerships with the Larner College of Medicine at UVM, in the research areas of infectious disease, metabolism and endocrinology, and reproductive physiology. Researchers across UVM’s campus have access to core facilities offering genotyping and molecular phenotyping, microscopy imaging, laboratory animal resources, and bioinformatics and biostatistics. Areas of scholarly focus in Animal and Veterinary Sciences include lactation & mammary gland biology, genetics & genomics, nutrition & metabolism, animal health & biosecurity, dairy production & management, and equine science. The faculty are committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising for students with interests in general animal science, pre-veterinary and pre-professional science, equine science, dairy production & management, and companion & zoo animal science. With a metro-area population of approximately 210,000, Burlington is Vermont’s largest city. UVM’s hometown perennially appears on national rankings that laud its livability, access to nature and recreation (including the best skiing in the northeast), thriving food and music scene, rising identity as a technology and innovation hub, and its status as a top college town. City perks include an active pedestrian marketplace in the heart of downtown, 8 miles of waterfront along Lake Champlain featuring stunning sunsets over the Adirondacks beyond, and a 12-mile paved bike trail that runs along the lake. Burlington’s nickname, BTV, comes from the code for its airport, just 10 minutes from campus. With Montreal about two hours away and Boston less than four hours away by car, international and metropolitan culture are easily accessible for weekend adventures.
