The Tree Physiology and Ecosystem Science Lab in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University seeks to hire a Research Technician to lead fieldwork for a variety of studies on carbon and water cycling in managed and unmanaged forests, and agricultural systems. Job duties will consist of frequent day trips to field sites located across eastern and central North Carolina to perform measurements on trees and soils, maintain equipment, and collect samples. The job will also entail limited lab work to assist students and scientists, sample processing, purchasing supplies, maintaining lab hygiene and safety training. The research technician will also help organize and conduct workshops and field days related to bioenergy studies, interfacing with a variety of constituencies, including farmers, foresters, state agencies, academia, and the private sector. The position is for one year initially, but may be extended depending upon the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

- Ability to work without close supervision and to make decisions concerning
- weather conditions and other logistical factors;
- Ability to work closely with students, faculty and other staff to maintain
- research efficiency of the project;
- Willingness and ability of engage in intensive field research activities in
- various ecosystems and in lab experiments;
- Commitment to a safe and inclusive working environment required, including
- the safe use of power equipment and vehicles.
- Lead in the field measurements (tree height and diameter, biomass surveys,
- soil sampling, and other field observations)
- Maintain flux towers and troubleshoot sensor-based malfunctioning,
- including battery and solar power system installations, as the need arises
- Manage collected data, encoding, and data quality control and archiving
- Help in purchasing supplies and materials for the projects
- Maintain and manage the instruments, equipment and other apparatus in the
- lab and in the storage room.
- Help analyze data and other lab/field analytical operations, whenever needed
Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Forestry, environmental science, or other related
science discipline

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
BS/MS in Forestry, Environmental Science or related field. Laboratory operations experience and documentation of safe driving certification are beneficial.
