Basic Function

Under direction of an administrator or manager, provides instructional, physical, and emotional assistance and support to disabled students; assists instructors in Educational Assistance. Assists in the administration and proctoring of tests according to established guidelines and procedures.

Representative Duties

1. Assists in the administration and proctoring of tests according to established guidelines and procedures for students with disabilities, including functioning as a scribe, as needed. E

2. Receives inquiries from students; schedules appointments for a variety of needs such as testing, assessments, counseling, and registration. E

3. Prepares and maintains various records and reports such as test proctoring schedules, accessible furniture inventories, and specialized equipment use; utilizes the online student database to regularly review and reference data related accommodation requests related to the area of assignment; may assist with student progress reports. E

4. Provides information regarding the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) program, services and resources to students and the public. E

5. Assists students in navigating college admission and registration procedures. E

6. Provides assistance to instructors in special education classes. E

7. Assists students and staff with completing the preliminary requirements for the DSPS Student Education Contract; ensures compliance to contract requirements. E

8. Provides information and emotional support to students as needed; relates positively to the emotional needs of students with disabilities and assists them in functioning productively in the educational environment. E

9. Communicate with various District departments and personnel, students, other educational institutions, outside agencies and the public as necessary to facilitate DSPS services; provides information to the supervisor regarding the needs of disabled students. E

10. Under supervision provides instructional assistance, including tutoring, to students with disabilities. E

11. Operates a variety of equipment and machines including computers and commonly used computer technologies, copier, audio recorder, closed circuit television and other assistive technologies. E

12. Assists with outreach activities to engage DSPS students and the community on campus and off-site as requested. E

13. Provides DSPS community outreach – on campus and off-site as necessary. E

14. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and corres­pondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E

15. Performs other duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
· District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
· California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
· Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
· Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
· Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment.
· Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
· Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
· Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
· General knowledge of the educational, physical, and emotional aspects of students with disabilities.
· Applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
· Basic methods and techniques of American Sign Language (desired).
· Special resources and equipment designed for students with disabilities.

· Strong customer/student services skills, including but not limited to: telephone techniques and etiquette.
· Record-keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing system methods and techniques.
· Tutoring methods and techniques for students with disabilities
· Community College procedures and guidelines
· General knowledge of applicable laws, codes and regulations including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments (ADAA) regulations.
· Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
· Basic operating knowledge of assistive technology software used in the DSPS lab.
· Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

· Communicate with students, staff, and the public in person and via a variety of communication modalities using various technology resources.

· Generate and prepare standard reports related to the area of assignment.
· Operate a variety of diverse types of equipment and machines including computers, copier, audio recorder, closed circuit television, and other assistive technologies.
· Understand the educational and physical development of students with disabilities.
· Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those encountered during the course of work.

Education and Experience

· Associate degree with coursework in a related discipline; AND
· Two (2) years of experience working with and/or tutoring adult students with disabilities.
· Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
