Summary & Qualifications:

Summary:
This is a full-time on-site role for a Campus Safety Coordinator at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, MI. The Campus Safety Coordinator will be responsible for Health & Safety, Environment Health and Safety (EHS), Occupational Health, Safety Training, and Accident Investigation on all NMC campuses.

Required Qualifications:

  •  Associate degree with additional certifications or training in safety management
  •  3+ years of supervisory experience
  •  The ability to remain composed and focused under high-pressure situations
  •  OSHA 30-Hour training certification (or required to complete within 6 months of hire)
  •  CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification (or complete within 3 months of hire)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, public safety, environmental health, criminal justice, or related field.
  •  5+ years of supervisory experience
  •  Accident Investigation experience
  •  Previous experience with workplace safety training

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensures a safe, attractive, and functional environment for the students, faculty, staff, and community partners of Northwestern Michigan College.
  • Fosters relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective professional communication and collaboration at all levels.
  • Develops and maintains robust working relationships with state, county, and local agencies such as police, fire department, emergency services, and other first responders.
  • Ensures College faculty, staff, and students are properly trained and prepared to respond to emergency events by designing, coordinating, and scheduling regular training exercises, drills, table-tops, walkthroughs, virtual/module training, and other desired and/or required safety and security training initiatives.
  • Provides leadership and guidance for the College’s security department; manages the third- party security contract and contracted employees. Holds regular meetings with the contracted security team to plan, prepare and ensure adequate safety measures and resources are in place for scheduled events and campus activities. Ensures contracted security staff are properly trained and equipped to respond to routine and non-routine incidents on campus.
  • Approve and track all security incident reports, patrol logs, and other safety and security reports and assessments; debrief incident reports and assessments, develop any necessary plans of action or response, and execute such measures.
  • Serves as the chair of NMC’s emergency management team (EMT) and leads the College’s emergency management function. Regularly reviews and updates the College’s emergency operations plan (EOP). Tests NMC’s emergency alert systems (EAS) in collaboration with the Public Relations, Marketing, and Communications (PRMC) department.
  • Participates on the College’s Behavioral Intervention Response Team (BIRT) and develops a trusting and healthy culture of behavioral reporting on campus.
  • Represent NMC on the Michigan Community College Safety, Security, and Emergency Management Association (MCC-SEMA) to develop a network and relationships with other community college safety leaders to recommend ideas and best practices that will enhance safety on NMC’s campus.
  • Responds to emergency events on campus. Undertakes immediate evaluation of the emergency and assesses its ongoing threat to campus. Serves as liaison between College leadership and emergency services in developing a campus response.
  • Determines whether campus closure or delay is warranted due to inclement weather. Makes recommendations to the VP of Educational Services.
  • Manages and enforces campus parking in accordance with College policy and city ordinances. Administers parking passes for students, staff, and guests.
  • Conducts routine safety risk assessments on campus. Coordinates and leverages third-party security assessments as warranted to identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Responsible for all governmentally required safety compliance such as Clery and VAWA acts; prepares and submits the College’s annual Clery report. Maintains a daily crime log for public inspection as required.
  • Monitors the campus security systems including surveillance, electronic door access controls, EAS, physical door locks, and more; in coordination with the Information Technology team, leverages software and technology to maximize security efficiencies.
  • Coordinates regular updates to the College’s campus safety website.
  • Maintains the master material safety data sheets (MSDS) file for the College. Ensures all departments handling hazardous chemicals or waste are doing so in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensures College awareness and compliance with all applicable workplace safety regulations enforced by OSHA, MIOSHA, and other Federal, State, and Local laws. Facilitates college- wide and department-specific safety programs, initiatives, and inspections such as fire inspections, county health inspections for food service operations, hazardous waste reporting, bloodborne pathogen training, and more.
  • Recommends new safety-related policies or policy changes to ensure the College is following applicable workplace safety laws, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Develops and adheres to the annual departmental budget.
  • Works standard business hours, however, irregular hours may be required for large campus events, expected weather events, or other situational needs.
  • May be called upon to assist in investigations of security incidents, student conduct, and/or Title IX matters.
  • Contributes to the success of the College’s safety and security functions by performing all other essential duties as assigned.
