Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Arts and Sciences provides leadership and coordination within the Arts and Sciences Division. The Dean plans and coordinates all aspects of the arts and sciences programs/departments to align with the college mission. They oversee curriculum and program development and enhance the educational effectiveness of all assigned instructional areas. The Dean provides support to the academic instructional programs/departments in accordance with the Laredo College District policies and procedures to ensure students can meet their educational objectives. The Dean supervises the Behavioral Sciences, Honors Program, Kinesiology, English, Languages, and Cultural Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Performing Arts and Communication, and Social Sciences departments.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide leadership in developing and integrating instructional strategic plans, goals, and objectives consistent with the institutional mission.
2. Provide leadership for decision-making, problem-solving, and personnel management within the respective Division.
3. Provide leadership in promoting ethical standards among program directors, faculty, and staff.
4. Provide leadership relating to student issues, including students' complaints, faculty advising, and registration. Mediate conflicts and/or disagreements between faculty and students.
5. Provide leadership in developing and implementing assessment plans, including Institutional Effectiveness plans related to supervised areas, General Education plans, and Course-Based assessment plans, which focus on the teaching-learning processes.
6. Provide leadership in developing facilities, staffing, and resource planning.
7. Provide leadership in curriculum improvement through constant review, regular evaluation, revision, and attention to the relevance of all courses and programs.
8. Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development and program reviews, including developing and assessing student learning outcomes.
9. Monitor and analyze student performance data to assess progress toward performance-based outcomes and maintain accountability for meeting performance metrics and addressing areas needing improvement.
10. Participate in shared leadership with the department chairpersons, directors, and faculty members.
11. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, hiring, orientation, supervising, and evaluating qualified full-time and adjunct faculty; evaluate credentials/records for all faculty members.
12. Participate in developing informational materials for publication (brochures, pamphlets, catalog, webpages, etc.); coordinate programmatic promotions such as tours and school presentations; and provide data for the College catalog about the unit.
13. Participate in the development of external grants for the units supervised.
14. Participate in developing and implementing the academic calendar approved by the Board of Trustees.
15. Supervise the preparation of schedules, teaching assignments, and class and room assignments; monitor enrollments and faculty loads and adjust according to registration trends and fiscal demands.
16. Be responsible for budget recommendations and administration of the budgets in their area of responsibility.
17. Organize divisional and departmental meetings. Attend leadership, dean, and other meetings as assigned.
18. Promote, organize, coordinate, and provide the leadership to develop programs in conjunction with department chairpersons and directors.
19. Consult and recommend faculty tenure, post-tenure, and evaluation processes. Review and handle concerns and issues according to policy and procedures.
20. Oversee preparation of appropriate documentation required to obtain and maintain programmatic accreditation or certification/recognition.
21. Develop and foster positive working relationships with placement sites, including developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), an agreement, and/or a contract.
22. Coordinate and participate in evaluating instructional staff, including faculty, department chairpersons, directors, and support staff.
23. Prepare and submit reports required for performance measures, federal and state reporting, grants (current and future), articulation agreements, memorandum of understanding, licensing, and accreditation compliance.
24. Work with other areas and divisions within the college to address issues dealing with assessment, recruitment, and dual-enrollment programs.
25. Support and promote teaching effectiveness by offering guidance and assistance to faculty in developing and implementing academic and professional goals in teaching and service. 
26. Support and promote professional and personal growth for faculty and staff through ongoing professional development.
27. Establish and maintain external relationships that benefit instruction, including those of business and industry, community, secondary and post-secondary institutions, and other appropriate agencies.
28. Represent and serve on institution-wide, community, and state/local committees as opportunities arise.
29. Ensure program compliance with college policies and procedures, licensing/credentialing bodies’ requirements and regulations, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) principles.
30. Participate in SACSCOC and THECB accreditation activities; implement an Institutional Effectiveness plan related to areas supervised.
31. Perform other duties assigned by the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

  1. Provide leadership and support to the department chairpersons/directors with assessment coordinator(s) and dual enrollment liaison(s).
  2. Support strategies to enhance student retention and success while preparing students for academic careers.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A minimum of three years of progressively increasing administrative experience (such as Chair, Director, or Associate Dean), experience in developing and monitoring budgets, and experience in management and planning, preferably in a community college environment. 
  • A minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience at the college level.

Preferred:
  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively increasing administrative experience (such as Chair, Director, or Associate Dean), experience in developing and monitoring budgets, and experience in management and planning, preferably in a community college environment. 
  • A minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience at the college level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • To excel in their role, the dean must possess a combination of skills, knowledge, and abilities. 
  • The dean manages various aspects, including budgeting and resource allocation, and participates in strategic planning. 
  • They provide leadership, partake in hiring and evaluation processes, handle student and curricular matters, and communicate effectively. 
  • It is essential the dean possesses strong, clear, and effective interpersonal and communication skills to convey complex ideas to others. 
  • Additionally, they address conflicts, conduct program reviews, and implement protocols. 
  • They contribute to instructional vitality by analyzing data, building rapport with faculty, staff, students, and administration, and fostering a positive learning environment. 
  • Proficiency in technology tools, adherence to ethical standards, and effective time management are also crucial. 
  • Balancing administrative duties requires strong organizational skills.

The Dean of Arts & Sciences reports directly to the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs. 

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
