The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Guilford County Extension Horticulture Program and volunteers.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Guilford County Extension Horticulture Program and Volunteers.

  • Under general supervision, performs technical and administrative work in coordinating the NC State Extension Master Gardener program. Assists the Consumer Horticulture Agent in supplying information to homeowners concerning consumer horticulture. This information distribution could include phone calls, mailings, emails, newsletter articles, website and social media posts and other methods of communication.

  • Gathers data and information, analyzing horticultural information for homeowners.

  • Utilizes NCCE specialists, NCSU Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, and NCCE horticulture listservs to assist in identification of insects, diseases and environmental issues affecting homeowner’s plants, gardens and lawns.

  • Assists Horticulture Agent with consumer horticulture programming, including recommending needed programming, scheduling and facilitation.

  • Recruits, trains, and prepares volunteers for certification and recertification for the NC State Extension Master Gardener program. Assists volunteers in preparing monthly and annual activity reports.

  • Supports county marketing efforts.


  • Provide customer service and office support by maintaining a well-organized office, monitoring the telephone traffic, ensuring follow-up of inquiries are routed, and assisting with telephone answering and reception when needed.

  • Participate in appropriate in-service training, conferences, staff retreats, volunteer events, etc.

Work Schedule

8:00am - 5:00pm Monday-Friday, with some evening and weekend work required.

Minimum Experience/Education

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Department Required Skills

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and standard practices, methods, and techniques pertaining to horticulture.

General knowledge of tools and supplies used in horticulture.

Ability to use common office machines, including computer programs involving website and app maintenance. Must be proficient in Excel and Word software programs, and comfortable using email and digital calendars.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

One to two years of experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is preferred.
