Financial Coordinator, Department-Controlled Funds

Job Description

FINANCIAL COORDINATOR, DEPARTMENT-CONTROLLED FUNDS, Biology, to provide complex and diverse financial support for department-controlled funds in a department using a combined centralized and decentralized financial management model.  Activities include payroll processing, salary distribution, and certification; graduate student aid; core research facilities; outreach programs; and special projects.  Responsibilities include managing payroll processes and serving as primary contact for students/employees on payroll matters; managing the allocation of graduate student support, acting as local expert on types of graduate student awards, and serving as first point of contact with graduate students to resolve payroll problems; providing financial support for core research facilities and a few special department programs; working as part of a team that assesses needs and develops more effective technological solutions to improve efficiency, reduce paper, and move toward integrated cross-departmental operational systems; staying abreast of, interpreting, and providing guidance on department and MIT policies; and handling additional duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor's degree; two years' financial management experience, preferably in an academic environment; high-level proficiency with Excel; initiative; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; attention to detail; ability to manage a variety of tasks concurrently, research and resolve discrepancies, exercise sound judgment, anticipate needs, work independently and as part of a team, remain flexible as situations demand, and adapt quickly to new technologies; and discretion and diplomacy with confidential information/issues. PREFERRED: experience with MIT financial systems, particularly BrioQuery, B2P, Cognos, Concur, FRC, GAP, SAP/SAPgui and xTrain; knowledge of MIT payroll procedures, faculty summer salary regulations, and graduate student award appointments and funding guidelines; and experience with FileMaker/QuickBase and Tableau or other data visualization software.  Job #24245-6
