Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Using advanced knowledge of design and construction of mechanical and plumbing systems, provides mechanical/plumbing inspection and coordinates mechanical/plumbing aspects of multiple, large-scale capital and small construction projects for College Park and/or other campuses of the University System of Maryland.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
BS in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Architecture, or related field.
Note: Vocational higher education, college course accreditation in construction-related fields, and/or additional construction experience, including project management and field inspection activities, may be substituted for the required education on a one year of vocational education and/or experience for one year of required education.

Experience:
With a Bachelor’s degree, four (4) years of applicable experience required in construction supervision/coordination and quality control in building and mechanical systems construction; without a Bachelor’s degree, eight (8) years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to independently inspect and coordinate small and large construction projects.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (in oral and written form) with customers, government agencies, and other service and support agencies, and with professional staff at a technical level.
  • Ability to review and understand project finances, make and review estimates, and recommend contract change orders to Architect/Engineering firms and contractors.
  • Ability to interpret project plans and specifications including knowledge of all state and local codes applicable to construction.
  • Ability to prepare management reports.
  • Ability to perform contractor and A/E evaluations.
  • Possess knowledge of project management, engineering (civil, mechanical, or electrical), or architecture.
  • Ability to apply computer skills to include project management systems, MS Word, Excel, and Google mail and calendar programs.
  • Must be decisive, and able to handle multiple simultaneous problems quickly, independently and efficiently.

Preferences:

Preferences:
MS in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, or Architecture, or related field.

Additional Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C Driver’s license or equivalent to travel to other USM campuses. If driving a state vehicle, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid license with fewer than 6 points.

The hiring range for this position is $90,120-$112,000.

Physical Demands

Position is physically demanding since incumbent is required to enter all areas of buildings under construction, from trenches and excavations to structural steel erection, and must spend a majority of time in the field on the job site and under all weather conditions. Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment as required at construction sites. Incumbent must be decisive, alert and able to handle a number of simultaneous problems quickly, efficiently and independently.
