Position: Director of Operations

Organization:

Justice North (formerly known as, Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota) is a non-profit legal aid organization dedicated to providing high-quality legal services to individuals and communities in need. Our mission is to ensure equal access to justice for all, regardless of socio-economic status. We strive to empower our clients by advocating for their rights and providing legal assistance in various areas of law. Justice North provides legal representation to low-income and senior citizens in 11 counties in northern Minnesota with offices in Duluth, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Brainerd, and Pine City.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Operations to join our team. The Director of Operations, who will report directly to the Executive Director, will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day operational functions of our organization. This individual will work as part of the executive team to develop and implement strategies to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and enhance overall organizational performance. The position can be primarily remote, with the option to work out of any of the five Justice North offices. There are a few meetings and/or trainings per year that require in-person attendance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Grant Management: Lead the organization in grant management, applications, execution of deliverables, reporting, and evaluation. Work closely with Director of Finance to ensure grants are allocated and expended in accordance with grant contracts and organizational budget. Develop strategies for performance with Director of Advocacy and all other applicable staff. Monitor performance and ensure compliance with grant guidelines.
  • Project Management: Lead and coordinate all operational activities related to the organization's projects. This includes developing and implementing project plans, assigning tasks to team members, monitoring progress, ensuring projects are completed on time and have met the projects’ objectives. Additionally, this responsibility entails fostering collaboration among staff and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with Justice North’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Operational Oversight: Oversee all aspects of organizational operations, including but not limited to grant management, technological innovations, private attorney involvement, business process improvement, facilities management, case management system, organizational IT, communications, and other oversight functions as needed to support organizational operations.
  • Strategic Planning: When necessary, lead the leadership team and engage the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with the organization's mission and goals. Create systems to ensure the organization sets realistic timelines and accountability to ensure the objectives of the strategic plan are achieved.
  • Process Improvement: Work with staff to Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency enhancement across all operational areas. Develop and implement strategies to streamline workflows and optimize resource utilization.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Work with leadership team to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, laws, and organizational policies. Develop and implement risk management strategies to mitigate potential operational risks.
  • Technology Integration: Oversee the efforts to leverage technology to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness. Evaluate and work with key staff to implement new systems and tools as needed to support organizational objectives.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, board members, clients, partners, and funders. Collaborate cross-functionally to achieve organizational goals.

Qualifications:

Candidates for this position should provide information in their cover letter, resume, and references to demonstrate they meet these qualifications:

  • Licensed Attorney in State of Minnesota: This is a must-have qualification for understanding the legal complexities of the organization's work and providing legal oversight when necessary.
  • Leadership Experience: Experience in a senior management or leadership role within a legal aid organization or a similar nonprofit environment.
  • Operations Management: Proven track record in operational management, including overseeing daily operations, strategic planning, and implementing organizational policies and procedures.
  • Grants Management: Experience in grant oversight, grant writing, budgeting, and grant reporting. Knowledge of nonprofit grants management, financial planning, cultivating donor relationships and fundraising strategies would be beneficial.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a diverse team, fostering a positive work environment and promoting professional growth.
  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Experience in strategic planning, goal setting, and execution, with a focus on achieving organizational objectives and enhancing organizational effectiveness.
  • Program Development and Evaluation: Experience in program development, evaluation, and impact assessment, ensuring programs align with organizational goals and effectively serve the community.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Proven ability to collaborate with stakeholders, including staff, board members, donors, volunteers, and community partners, to advance the organization's mission.
  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with relevant technologies and software used in nonprofit management, operations, and legal aid work.
  • Commitment to Social Justice: A strong commitment to social justice and advancing the rights of disadvantaged and underserved populations.

Compensation:

Starting salary is pursuant to Justice North’s salary scale based on years of experience, starting at $107,000. Justice North offers an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental, life and disability insurance, 403(b) retirement plan; exceptionally generous paid time off, and observes federal holidays.
