The mission of the Department of Population, Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire, and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department’s faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.
Essential Job Duties
This position will serve as the Accountant for the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology (PHP) and is responsible for the financial management of the department’s state appropriated, discretionary, gifts, grant and sales and services accounts (Ledgers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 projects). The Accountant administers and manages a total spending budget for the department of approximately $9M in annual expenditures.
The Accountant independently performs a variety of accounting and budget functions, processes financial transactions, and develops and maintains complex reports on department’s operating budget. The employee must have thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures and federal statutes, ability to interpret policies and procedure, and monitor accounts for compliance and accuracy.

The employee must have thorough knowledge of University policies and procedures and federal statutes, ability to interpret policies and procedure, and monitor accounts for compliance and accuracy.
Additionally we’re seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to:
- Ensure robust internal controls.
- Manage financial documents with precision.
- Gatekeep travel authorizations.
- Conduct thorough research on substantive issues.
- Collaborate on fiscal year-end close-outs.
- Proactively identify and resolve financial challenges.
- Assist faculty/staff and serve as a policy interpreter.
- Provide guidance and training on finance policies and transactions.
- Act as a liaison with the College Business Office.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in Accounting; or Associate’s degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications
Communication Excellence:
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills, and positive attitude
- Exception attention to detail, handling multiple priorities simultaneously.
Accounting and Grants Mastery:
- In-depth accounting knowledge, proficient in accounting principles and expenditure planning, including grant management expertise.
- Knowledge of financial policies, research administration and compliance procedures, including funding agency requirements
Tech Savvy:
- Proficient in PeopleSoft Financials or equivalent.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially in Excel for reporting and reconciliation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of University’s policies and procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of Peoplesoft Financial system, WOLF Reports, Labor Reports, Payroll Distribution Reports, PINS, RADAR and the PMR system.
- Expert knowledge of PeopleSoft financials to effectively create reports, audit/reconcile projects, reconcile p-cards, and process financial transactions.
- Proficient skill using Excel to create reports for various purposes (i.e. allocation of budgets, projections, spending, etc.).
