The Communications Department is looking for an Editorial Operations Lead, housed within the Technical Writing and Operations Section of its Messaging and Editorial Group.

 

As an Editorial Operations Lead...

  • Partner with the section supervisors for Editorial and Technical Writing to lead intake of new classified and unclassified editorial and technical writing work, understanding skill sets and availabilities of the team to effectively assign tasking.
  • Be the primary intake interface for the three sections, understanding the necessary questions to ask and information to glean to ensure requests are processed expediently and proper processes are followed.
  • Partner with the section supervisors and COMM’s finance and operations team to create accurate estimates for work and level of effort.
  • Work with the group and section supervisors on long-term planning for the editorial and technical writing sections.
  • Work closely across the department and the Laboratory to assist staff members in understanding priority of the work, establishing workflows, ensuring accurate adherence to use of content management tools and processes, and managing staff workload and client expectations.
  • Partner closely with COMM project managers to ensure effective communication of deadlines, benchmarks and accountability for all project stakeholders.
  • Support operations for the Lab’s technical journal, the APL Technical Digest, to include working with the Tech Digest editor in chief and managing editor to identify themes and topics for issues, maintain mailing lists, assist with administration and more.
  • Develop a high-level understanding of the technical editing and writing work being performed by the group, as well as the needs of our partners around the Laboratory, and be able to adequately convey and advocate for the sections’ role and expertise.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • A bachelor's degree in English, communications or a related field, or equivalent years of experience.
  • 2+ years of related professional experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, especially with broad multipronged initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels of a matrixed organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations, collaborate across the organization, ask timely questions and communicate clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing needs and situations.
  • Willingness to learn and develop in skill areas in which you may not have as much experience.
  • Are able to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Project management certifications or education, such as a PMP.
  • Knowledge of classified systems and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience leading intake of work or in other traffic management roles.
  • Holds an active secret clearance.

Demonstrated experience managing or working on large publication projects.
