The University of Notre Dame campus functions like a small town, offering police services, fire protection, shopping, and entertainment. Working in the Communication Center, you’ll combine emergency dispatch duties with high-level customer service.

As a Communications Officer, you’ll be key to Campus Safety, supporting events year-round, including sports, commencement, and concerts. You’ll collaborate with various campus divisions to ensure prompt responses for Police, Fire, Risk Management, and other services to keep our community safe.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize a computer-aided dispatch system to track all calls for service.
  • Manage administrative phone lines, emergency phone lines, closed-circuit television, and various alarm systems.
  • Multitask effectively while working closely with team members.
  • Provide the highest level of customer service.

Job duties that you can expect to perform as a Notre Dame Communications Officer are but not limited to:
  • Handle 9-1-1 and other emergency/non-emergency calls
  • Dispatch appropriate personnel or provide information and referrals
  • Assist walk-ins at the Communications Center window
  • Support Patrol Officers with information from NCIC, IDACS, and university databases
  • Coordinate emergency responses and provide pre-arrival instructions during medical emergencies
  • Document and dispatch all calls for service in the computer-aided dispatch system

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Strong typing/writing skills
  • Effective communications skills in a diverse population
  • Maintain calm and work well in high stress situations
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Successfully pass a Multi-tasking exam

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 or more years in a Emergency Dispatch Center
  • IDACS Certified
  • Certifications in Priority Dispatch (EFD, EMD, and/or EPD)
  • IAED Member
