Job Description

The Balfour-Hesburgh Scholars Program Education and Outreach Specialist will serve approximately 100 undergraduates, primarily high-achieving first-generation, low-income students (FGLI) from under-resourced backgrounds. Responsibilities include oversight and assistance with the Program’s pre-matriculation program, curricular and co-curricular activities, and various academic, social, and service opportunities designed to cultivate intellectual engagement, leadership, and service among the Balfour Hesburgh Scholars. The EOS may have opportunities to develop new programming, including potential credit bearing opportunities related to the program.

The Education and Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Faculty Director of the BHSP to establish and maintain working relationships throughout the University. The EOS will assist with targeted, ongoing programming, including: planning and implementing the Balfour Hesburgh Scholar-Alumni Mentor Networking Initiative, involving travel to various cities and organizing a mini-conference with Balfour alumni; supervising the Balfour Student Board, assisting with application review, interviewing prospective scholar candidates, and selecting members of new cohorts.

The EOS interacts with students frequently and will serve as a mentor along with providing support for the Balfour Hesburgh Scholars Program ’s physical space with regular office hours, mentoring and managing scholar needs. The Education and Outreach Specialist will also be integrally involved in the Balfour Hesburgh pre-matriculation programming. Some evenings and weekends for events and travel are required.

Please note this is a 3 year limited term position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-4 years of relevant experience, including student supervision/oversight.
  • Proficiency in Google Suites and Microsoft Suite, including Excel/Google Sheets, Forms, and Shared Drives
  • Commitment to the protection of minors and all related compliance measures
  • Proficiency and professionalism in social media (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and culturally sustaining practices.
  • A commitment to the University’s Catholic identity and the ability to engage in practices consistent with the University’s Catholic mission, values, and teachings.
  • A commitment to a developmental model of advocating for, advising, and engaging with students.
  • Knowledge about developmental, psychological, social and physical, and intellectual issues related to young adulthood.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Experience working with college students in a residential campus setting.
  • Experience working with first generation college students.
  • Experience with multifaceted and multimodal interventions related to student success.
  • Experience managing crisis situations with youth or young adults.
  • Spanish proficiency.
