You will play a pivotal role in executing the strategy for engaging external audiences and communicating the Institute’s groundbreaking research which is focused on leveraging data and technology for societal good. Driven by Notre Dame’s mission, the Lucy Family Institute embodies adventurous collaboration, daring to confront society’s most pressing issues head-on.

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Develop the external engagement strategy for the Institute’s body of work that frames engagement and impact stories for different audience segments and stakeholders.
  • Play a key role in crafting compelling narratives, including op-eds that popularize data-driven and AI research, making complex ideas accessible and engaging for the public.
  • Collaborate closely with the Notre Dame D.C. Office to develop policy briefs and other material as needed for supporting their interface and awareness of AI engagement on behalf of the Lucy Family Institute, with the policymakers.
  • Develop a global network of contacts and partnerships among AI researchers, civil society groups, journalists, industry, regulators and other stakeholders that are central to the current dialogue on AI.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Curate relevant editorial content for engagement strategies and programs with the Institute’s programs, globally.
  • Collaborate closely with the University’s communications team, faculty, staff, students, and external partners to align storytelling efforts with the institute’s mission.
  • Develop impact stories about the Institute’s work to facilitate storytelling and fund-raising efforts in collaboration with the University’s Development Team.
  • Work with the Institute leadership and communication specialists to develop the digital, print, web and social media strategy, including web design and annual reporting.
  • Lead the organization of virtual and in-person events, training, podcasts, and other storytelling initiatives that amplify the work of the Institute.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (4 years); graduate degree strongly preferred
  • Experience: 5 to 6 years
  • Degree (Knowledge): digital humanities, journalism, communications, STEM, or business with a strong writing focus
  • Skills: Nuanced understanding of artificial intelligence, including current landscape, opportunities, and benefits and risks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehension of responsible AI, digital transformation/evolution, and the significance of media in engagement with stakeholders and citizen science.
  • Strong project management skills, and an ability to successfully multitask while maintaining the quality of the work.
  • Experience in developing engagement strategies, and seeing them through to completion.
  • Experience in developing op-eds or other editorial materials and policy briefs.
  • Experience defining key audiences to target with engagement initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and the ability to work effectively and sensitively across cultures.
