The Science House (TSH) is the College of Sciences statewide K-12 STEM outreach unit. Established in 1991, TSH is a national model of university collaboration between university departments, businesses, and the K-12 community. TSH’s mission is to collaboratively maintain and develop K-12 teacher and student programs that inspire a passion for STEM learning, research, and discovery. The Science House achieves this through four strategic priorities: 1) Teacher Professional Development centered on equipping teachers to use engaging instructional practices, emerging technologies, guided inquiry, and project-based learning, 2) Student Programs focused on problem-solving, applied learning, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and competition, 3) Rural Satellite Offices that provide teacher professional development, student programs, and an Equipment and Technology Loan Program in rural, high-need areas, and 4) Broader Impact Support that helps NC State faculty in developing Impact Identities and carrying out broader impacts activities integrated with their research that advance open and participatory science.

The Mountain Office is one of 2 satellite offices of The Science House. The Mountain Office serves more than 48,000 elementary, middle, and high school students and over 1200 teachers and administrators for 18 school systems in western North Carolina. Mountain Office staff provide professional development, consulting, instructional coaching, school-based assistance, curriculum materials, student programs and various technologies and equipment to western NC counties. The Mountain Office is located inside The Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River, NC.

The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the The Science House Mountain Office Equipment Loan Program.

Duties will include:
-Deliver and pick up ELP equipment at schools throughout western NC territory.
-Maintain ELP equipment
-Prepare equipment outgoing to schools
-Inspect returning equipment and do any necessary resupplying or repair
-Keep all computer software up-to-date, and ensure functionality and compliance with university protocol
-Maintain organization, labeling and storage of equipment
-Develop and maintain relationships with teachers, staff, and administrators at schools participating in the ELP
-Promote/Market the ELP and foster relationships with new and potential ELP participants
-Assist educators in using equipment
-Administer TSH/MSO MyTurn Website by maintaining up-to-date inventory, monitor reservations and check out materials
-Maintain communication with educators (email, face to face, phone)
-Collect, document and track data about ELP usage
-Conduct proper chemical protocols according to MSDS

Other Work/Responsibilities

Secondary Duties relating to Equipment Loan Program:
-Stay abreast of latest educational technologies.
-Develop new educational applications for equipment.
-Monitor State Vehicle to follow proper maintenance procedures.
-Design lessons and demonstrations to highlight technology use in STEM.
-Assist in workshops and/or events that involve the use of equipment.
-Represent the The Science House at STEM nights, conferences and other events.
-Gather, package, inventory and load materials for professional development.
-Other duties as needed.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelors Degree. 1 year professional experience in K-12 education that includes use of instructional technology.

Department Required Skills

-Ability to work well with people and technology
-Experience with k-12 technology
-Attention to detail and organizational skills
-Knowledge of k-12 technology used in classrooms (such as probes, microscopes, sensors, Makey Makey) and the ability to repair, clean and update software

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Bachelor’s degree in education or related field. K-12 teaching experience, and 2 years experience working with K-12 instructional technology
