Job Description

The Bloomberg School of Public Health Facilities Management Department is seeking an Architect. The Planning, Design & Construction (PD&C) team within Facilities Management is responsible for all major and minor capital projects for the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH).


Under supervision of the Associate Director of Planning, Design & Construction, the Architect provides planning, space use analysis, programming, design development, and other evaluations, and provides guidance of interior and exterior design issues during the design and construction of major and minor capital projects.


The Architect will initiate, execute, and/or oversee programming and planning efforts in support of development and implementation of the BSPH capital plan, strategic campus plans, and overall campus developments (i.e. storm water management master plan, maintenance investments, accessibility planning, space utilization, space standards, classroom design, etc.). The Architect provides oversight and guidance of campus building, space planning and design efforts, develops and maintains design guidelines and standards for building, space, landscape, and campus development, and reviews work by outside consultants to ensure conformance with plans, standards, and design intent. The Architect collaborates with other BSPH staff to provide comprehensive oversight of planning, design, and construction projects.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform technical analyses of existing building architectural systems to inform recommendations regarding design, functionality, and performance. This may include engaging outside consultants for testing, planning or design studies, and engineering support. Systems to be evaluated include building envelope, interior systems and finishes, space planning and layout, landscape, and site work.
  • Participate and provide technical direction in design and construction progress meetings to help ensure adherence to university standards and contract conditions.
  • Oversee, review, and evaluate Capital Project designs in support of the school’s standards, guidelines, policies, and campus development plans. Provide technical direction and guidance.
  • Work with stakeholders, BSPH staff and external consultants or experts as required to develop and document design standards for renovation and new construction that support the university goals and objectives, are durable and financially appropriate, and reflect sound architectural practice.
  • Provide oversight and review of consultant’s documents for design and construction projects in the area of architectural design, detailing, conformance with BSPH standards, and appropriateness of systems and product specification.\Interface with BSPH Operations personnel in recommending the most appropriate design solutions, addressing durability, financial sustainability, and architectural appropriateness.
  • Review construction work progress on construction sites for quality assurance and conformance with contract documents. Assist in resolving discrepancies and disputes that arise during the construction process.
  • Work with the senior leadership, departmental representatives, BSPH Operations, and government officials to guide and oversee the development and implementation of campus-based planning initiatives.
  • Work with the BSPH Operations & Sustainability and university constituents to champion progress on the university's sustainability initiatives.
  • Participate in other planning and design related tasks and initiatives of strategic importance to the BSPH as well as related data gathering and analysis, research, presentation preparation, facility surveys, and other ad hoc efforts as assigned.
  • Prepares information for decision making by BSPH leadership.

  • Knowledge of the furniture industry including specification, sourcing, installation, and maintenance.
  • Ability to build comprehensive reports for data within spreadsheet and database systems.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
  • Flexibility to work with last minute changes.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate a computer and/or other office equipment on a frequent basis.
  • Must frequently communicate with others and exchange accurate information.
  • Ability to move about the office and campus.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Ten years of experience in architectural planning and design work. Professional Architect license in the State of MD or a state with reciprocity is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • LEED Accreditation is desirable.
  • Use of BIM software, SketchUp, PhotoShop, and other graphics programs is desired.

Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PF  
Starting Salary Range: $84,700 - $148,300 Annually (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday-Friday: 8:30am - 5:30pm 
Exempt Status: Exempt
