As a Tutor, your main role in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) is to support students, observe and respond to student issues by facilitating problem-solving strategies adapted to the visitors’ needs. Tutors assist and coach other students in becoming a more successful and independent learner. Tutors provide and help integrate effective learning and study strategies, while at the same time helping to clarify and/or reinforce course content, assignments, and material.
Specific Position Duties
• Provide individualized content and skill-development tutoring to students and community users.
• Create and maintain a tutoring schedule convenient to both tutor and LRC department.
• Make appropriate student referrals to college offices, departments or professionals, when necessary.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of each tutoring session.
• Use active listening strategies, attend and complete tutor training and development sessions.
• Develop a good understanding and knowledge of college services, supports, and resources.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material, and discussions shared in the tutoring relationship.
• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills and experiences.
Minimum Qualifications
• Passion for helping & ability to instruct in a “hands-off” manner, allowing users to learn by doing.
• Ability to keep composure and focus while maintaining constructive and positive interactions.
• Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, successful, self-directed learners, allow students to determine content and pace of tutoring.
Preferred Qualifications
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
•Friendly demeanor that projects accessibility and tenacity to problem-solve with the student or community user.
• Good academic and student conduct standing.
•Strong knowledge of the instructional area 2 and/4 year degree, or comparable training/experience.
