|The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) seeks a postdoctoral associate to work with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment - Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) Project (see www.chime-experiment.ca), focussing on developing very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) capability for the localization of radio transients.|
The successful applicant will join the MIT Synoptic Radio Lab led by Prof. Kiyoshi Masui (https://space.mit.edu/research-groups/the-masui-synoptic-radio-lab/ ). CHIME/FRB is novel, digitally-driven radio telescope that is now the dominant instrument in discovering FRBs due to its unique combination of high sensitivity and wide field-of-view. We are now pursuing precise localizations of FRB sources using VLBI and "Outrigger" telescopes situated across North America. The project will include the construction, commissioning, operations, and data analysis for the Outriggers. Construction of the first of these Outriggers has recently begun.
A successful candidate will hold a PhD and have experience in a relevant field, including but not limited to observational FRB detection, VLBI, pulsar astronomy, and general radio astronomy. The candidate must be be goal oriented, a strong communicator, and able to work well in a team. Experience in data analysis, observations, and instrumentation are valued assets, as are strong programming skills.
The position will be based in the MIT Department of Physics and MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. MIT is home to a large and vibrant astrophysics research community including 20 faculty and 40 long-term research scientists. MIT researchers are actively involved in LIGO, HERA, NICER, Chandra, and TESS.
The appointment is for 2 years with further extensions contingent upon performance and availability of funding. It is expected that the appointment will commence in the spring or summer 2021 (start date is negotiable). Salary will be commensurate with experience and be competitive with leading international research centers. Review of applications will begin February 1st.
