General Summary

In a clinical setting, independently, consistently and accurately portrays specific emotions, behaviors and disease symptoms while interacting with students in the health care field during simulated patient encounters designed to enable experiential learning and/or assessment of students’ skills. Standardized patients will often be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the students learning experience. Assesses student behaviors using standardized measurement tools, and participates in group training and/or mentorship of entry-level standardized patients. Works varied hours on an on-call basis, as needed. Reports directly to Simulation Coordinator or Director of Nursing.

Specific Position Duties

1. Be highly dependable and punctual.
2. Demonstrates flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments.
3. Memorizes a case script detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
4. Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
5. Remains in a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions.
6. Accurately remembers encounters with students for the purpose of scoring student behaviors.
7. Participates in group training and/or mentorship of entry-level standardized patients.
8. Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations.
9. Work in a professional manner when interacting with and discipline.
10. Be willing to be audio and videotaped during simulations or encounters.
11. Provides educationally constructive verbal feedback within a structured format, as appropriate to the position.
12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED completion; satisfactory completion of at least 8 major case portrayals, per established department criteria.
• Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
• Applicants with acting experience are encouraged to apply, though this is not an obligatory skill set.
• Ability to accurately and convincingly maintain a specified character as trained.
• Ability to work flexible hours on a scheduled on-call basis.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to recall case information, as cued by students in a role-play situation.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of case and student information.
• Ability to understand and follow directions and incorporate trainer feedback.
• Ability to recall and accurately score student behaviors.
• Ability to be instructed by a Standardized Patient Educator.
• Must be able to: move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from an exam table, and quickly change from a gown to clothing.
• Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
• No or very limited physical effort required.
• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
