Research Specialist

Job Description

RESEARCH SPECIALIST, MIT.nano, to serve as a domain expert for imaging/metrology/characterization.  Will provide characterization equipment oversight and support; perform sample handling and preparation for metrology, imaging, and analysis; operate characterization and preparation equipment; provide assistance to and/or train facility users on techniques/equipment; oversee the scheduler to assure accurate records of equipment utilization; support regular maintenance of auxiliary instrumentation; carry out routine tasks (e.g., lab supplies handling and inventory); communicate with the users about schedules/equipment status; and foster an environment of teamwork and cooperation.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in material science, mechanical or chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, or related discipline; at least two years’ experience with material characterization processes; excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills; ability to work alone or on teams; interest in disseminating knowledge to and training the user community; and ability to work in a highly research-oriented yet disciplined environment that requires frequent interaction with faculty/students/research staff.  PREFERRED:  M.Sc. in areas noted above; expertise with optical, electron, and probe microscopy imaging techniques; understanding of and ability to explain the effects of changing tool parameters on instrument performance; hands-on experience with advanced characterization equipment (e.g., spectroscopic ellipsometry, absorption and transmission spectroscopy, optical profilometry, photoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray imaging) and sample preparation techniques); experience training in one-on-one interactions or groups; ability to convey technical content to those with diverse backgrounds/education; working knowledge of established and emerging research processes; interest in gaining new knowledge/skills; attention to detail; comfort conducting literature searches and troubleshooting technical issues; openness to acquiring new skills; and experience using computational software (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Mathcad).  Job #23438
