Transfer Counselor - Student Support Services Program (TRIO)

This is a full-time Student Support Services staff member who provides services designed to increase the retention, persistence and graduation of program participants through personal, educational and cultural activities. The TRIO program is supported by the US Department of Education to assist low-income students, first-generation college students and students with disabilities with successfully completing higher education.

This position reports to the Director, Student Support Services (TRIO) and has the following responsibilities:

  • Provides case management and holistic educational planning with a focus on second year students and those completing at least 75% of their program of study

  • Assesses the academic needs of all participants to ensure course selection within the academic pathway, monitors progress and follows-up on student progress toward goal

  • Maintains accurate and consistent contact data for program participants

  • Utilizes Starfish and other academic and educational systems to develop intervention and success strategies for program participants

  • Coordinates college and program enrichment activities including workshops and cultural trips for program participants

  • Establishes and maintains contact with four-year institutions of higher education admission and transfer representatives, including monitoring transfer articulation agreements at the institutions.

  • Plans, implements, and attends/virtual campus tours to four-year institutions of higher education for interested program participants, oversees tour, transportation arrangements and on-site coordination.

  • Assist participants in completing all requirements for admissions, financial aid, and scholarships and develops and conducts transfer activities to ensure participants are prepared for the transition from DCCC to a four-year college environment.

  • Use labor market information, wage data and regional workforce demand data to counsel students in their employment and career goals.

  • Collaborates with faculty and other campus staff to provide comprehensive academic support services to students, including the Learning Commons to ensure appropriate tutorial and learning styles are being addressed.

  • Assists in the recruitment, selection and enrollment program participants, preparation and completion of program reports and events.

  • Maintains sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Supports the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of the College.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Adult Education, Student Development, Higher Education or similar professional field of study

  • At least two years of experience working with people living in poverty, people of color, people with disabilities and/or first generation college students

  • At least two years of experience in academic advising and/or career counseling within a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in TRIO and student affairs within a community college setting

  • Fluency in Spanish

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment in the collection, carrying equipment, supplies and other instructional materials; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.
