Postdoctoral Research Associate - Condensed Matter Theory

Northeastern University

Job Description

About the Opportunity

SUMMARY

The Bansil Group is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Condensed Matter Theory. The Bansil Group conducts research on electronic structure, properties, spectroscopy, and applications of wide classes of complex materials. The current areas of interest include: optoelectronic properties of Weyl semimetals and other topological materials; complex magnetic states such as skyrmions and spin liquids of quantum matter and how they can be probed via x-ray scattering techniques; understanding of anodic and cathodic redox reactions towards more rational design of battery materials; machine-learning approaches for materials discovery for various application domains; quantum materials and sensing; linear and nonlinear responses of materials; properties of heterostructures and interfaces; realistic modeling of various highly resolved spectroscopies such as angle-resolved photoemission, scanning-tunneling, and inelastic x-ray scattering; magnetic and non-magnetic Compton scattering; among other areas.

This position is expected to transition in the near future to support efforts of the Quantum Materials and Sensing Institute (QMSI) at Northeastern, which includes the Experiential Quantum Advancement Laboratories (EQUAL). The EQUAL laboratory is exploring various aspects of 2D and other quantum materials, and their modeling, synthesis, characterizations, and applications. The projects include computational discovery and experimental development of new quantum materials and their heterogeneous structures, demonstration and interpretation of their properties, and the development of related sensing devices and applications. Topological, magnetic, superconducting, 2D, and other novel quantum materials for advancing next generation sensing and detection will be of interest.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will perform basic and applied research of a limited scope, primarily using existing theories and methods, but should have the ability and desire to innovate when these are insufficient.  They will assist the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants, maintain the laboratory research team, and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. The primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is completed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in initiating, executing, and completing research and experiments

  • Prepare and write research papers, presentations, grant proposals

  • Laboratory management

  • Train graduate students

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics or equivalent required by appointment start. The position is to conduct research in the field of electronic structure, properties, and spectroscopy of novel topological and non-topological materials. Must have demonstrated skills and experience in carrying out theoretical and computational work on electronic structure and properties of wide range of materials. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, attention to details, as well as training in research methodology and quantitative data analysis are essential to the successful candidate. Experience in writing proposals and project management experience are pluses.  Ability to communicate and coordinate with multiple senior researchers from different fields. Ability to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship and work under the supervision of a senior scholar.
