Postdoctoral Research Fellow
About the Opportunity
About the Roux Institute:
The Roux Institute is designed as an engine of innovation, talent-building, and economic growth for Portland, Maine, and northern New England. We are nurturing an environment for high-impact research and innovation in computer and data science, digital engineering, the advanced life sciences and medicine, and other tech fields. Partnership is what sets our education and research model apart. With leading companies at the table from day one, we are creating an agile workforce prepared to thrive in a competitive landscape powered by artificial intelligence as a force for good, and an environment for innovation in the life sciences and other high- growth sectors. Together, we envision an innovation corridor that in the coming years will stretch from Boston to Portland and beyond.
Research and Responsibilities:
This position will be within the Life Sciences and Medical Research vertical of the Roux Institute and will be supervised by Professor Raimond Winslow, PhD - Director of Life Sciences and Medical Research at The Roux and Professor of Bioengineering, Computer Science, and Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences at Northeastern University. The postdoc will contribute to a research project underway with the laboratory of Dr. Iain Drummond, PhD - Professor and Director, Kathryn W. Davis Center for Regenerative Biology and Aging at the Mount Desert Island Biological laboratory in Bar Harbor Maine. This research project will study the role of calcium signaling and cytoskeletal dynamics in kidney podocyte differentiation and function. Using podocyte transcriptomic datasets and transgenic calcium biosensors and optogenetic tools, the project seeks to understand the requirement for endogenous developmental calcium transients in establishing the complex cell shape and cell junctions in glomerular podocytes. The approach will be to generate dynamic simulations and machine learning approaches to modeling calcium regulation of cytoskeletal components and complex cell architecture.
Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related fields required.

  • Experience with statistical and/or dynamical systems modeling of biological systems and methods of network analysis

  • Experience with zebrafish genetics, confocal imaging, and Matlab would be a plus
